Ángel is a well-off Spaniard who is traveling to New York on the Kerberos alongside Ramiro, who presents himself publically as Ramiro's brother, but is actually his lover. During his time on the Kerberos, Ángel also develops a relationship with Krester.

Biography[]

Meeting Krester[]

After a not so discreet breakfast in the dining room, Ángel is scolded by his "brother" Ramiro for drawing attention to them. The difference between the two of them is that Ángel didn't have the fear that so often consumed Ramiro. It is then that they notice the ship is turning, breeding that very same fear in Ángel that just moments earlier he claimed not to have, as the brothers fear that they are headed back to Europe. After learning that the captain was detouring to search for the Prometheus, Ángel heads to the upper deck, where Krester, locked behind gates leading down to the lower class, asks for a cigarette. He obliges, but first, Ángel places the cigarette in his mouth before handing it over to Krester. Ángel recalls seeing him in the dining hall, taking a particular interest in the scars on his face, which he attempts to touch before Krester nervously pulls away and retreats down into the lower deck.[1]

Ángel makes his way down into the lower class, where he convenes with Krester. He slowly approaches and gifts him his silver cigarette case, placing it in Krester's pocket himself. That's when Tove interrupts, and Ángel sees his way out, joining Ramiro on the middle deck, where they discuss the possibility of police coming out to investigate. They are interrupted by Tove, who throws Ángel's cigarette case at his feet and tells him to leave her brother alone. Ángel then turns around to his brother's judgmental glare of disapproval. He warns Ramiro not to judge him and says he never pretended to be something he wasn't. The "brothers" return to their cabin, where he questions Ramiro about his fear, specifically the fact that he was neither a priest nor Ángel's brother. In reality, Ramiro is a Portuguese servant, who Ángel surmises is simply jealous. Overwhelmed with sexual tension, the two proceed to have sex in the cabin, with Ángel removing his shirt, exposing a back full of partially healed welts and wounds.[2]

Ángel and Krester convene on the upper deck, but this time, Krester is looking for his missing sister, but the two don't understand each other. Ángel asks about the scar on Krester's face. They all wear masks, presenting a perfect illusion on the outside while they desperately try to hide who they are on the inside. Ángel has been forced to hide who he is his whole life. He didn't choose his mask, his mother did. Ángel then proceeds to put his hand down Krester's pants until Krester pulls away, at which point, Krester returns the favor and places his hand down Ángel's. When Ángel returns to his cabin, he is confronted by Ramiro, who has discovered his drawing of Krester. Ángel is more concerned with the apparent mutiny, but Ramiro continues; he killed a man and took his identity, all because of Ángel's inability to control his urges, to which Ángel replies that he cannot change the nature of things and that he is who he is.[3]

Ending it with Krester[]

Ángel's cabin is raided by the mutineers, who are in search of the boy from the Prometheus. To his surprise, Krester is among the mutineers, so naturally Ángel looks to him for help when one of the mutineers attempt to steal his valuables, which doesn't go unnoticed by Krester's mother, who demands to know why Ángel knows his name. Iben then grabs the pocket watch and drops it at Ángel's feet. Ángel grabs Krester's arm as he walks away in tears, but with his mother watching, Krester feels as if he has no other choice but to push Ángel away and spit in his face.[4]

Ángel barricades himself in the cabin after a ticking sound on board the ship begins to cause passengers to throw themselves overboard. He is soon joined by Ramiro, and eventually, the ticking stops, at which point they sigh with relief.[5]

Ángel's death[]

Ángel and Ramiro stay behind in the engine room to shovel coal into the furnace and ensure the ship continues to run. However, the ship takes a massive dip, causing a large metal beam in the engine room to fall onto Ángel. Ramiro tries to free him, but there's no point. With blood running from his mouth, Ángel says that he will never understand why Ramiro fell in love with him and that he's the gentlest, most loyal man he'd ever met. With his final breath, he says that Ramiro is better off without him and that he's scared.[6]

Ramiro begins to hear Ángel's voice while attempting to escape the boat, first while in his memory. He follows it down a well, leading back to the boat and to the engine room, where the remaining passengers watch as the corrupted simulation is deleted.[7]

Trivia[]

  • Whilst not mentioned in the series, it should be noted that homosexuality was punishable for 10 years prison time during the 1800s. It is loosely hinted at under the guise of brotherhood between Ángel and Ramiro, who kept the true nature of their relationship secret.[8]
