Clémence is a young French newlywed who is trapped in an arranged marriage with someone she doesn't love, and her goal on the ship is to discover the New World and forge her own path, no longer subjecting herself to bow and smile like the perfect girl everyone expects her to be.

Biography[]

Clémence is curious about the disappearance of the Prometheus, the steamship that went missing four months ago, though her husband couldn't be bothered entertaining her suspicions or curiosities, nor did she seem particularly motivated to entertain his sexual urges, at which point he angrily pushes her aside due to her visible lack of interest. Lucien reminds Clémence that her parents are no longer around and that she no longer has to keep up her pretentious act of innocence. Their union was an arrangement, not a marriage, he remarks before exiting the room, leaving Clémence behind, whose look of feigned confusion turns into a more conniving smile.[1]

Meeting Jérôme[]

Clémence is approached on the deck by Jérôme, who is dressed as a crewman but doesn't exactly look like a crewman. Admittedly, people shouldn't judge by looks, but it's impossible to do so, she confesses. She's certain that he had made his mind up about her before he even approached. But assuming he is who he says he is, Clémence compares working on a ship to being in a prison, to which Jérôme replies that they're all in a prison one way or another. She asks if she knew him from somewhere and formally introduces herself before scurrying off, but not before Jérôme confesses that she was right and that he had made up his mind about her from the moment he saw her.[2]

Clémence finds an empty vial near Lucien's work stand and asks to know what it is. He reveals that it's potassium bromide to help with his seizures. If he doesn't take it, he begins seizing uncontrollably, but if he does, then he can't get a hard-on. The truth is, Lucien fears he will die soon. A few weeks at most. He didn't tell her sooner because he knows that she doesn't actually care if he's dead or alive. Lucien then opens his drawer and finds his commander's medal inside. He slams Clémence against the wall in a fit of rage and asks where it came from before storming out abruptly.

Clémence receives a surprise visit from Jérôme, who is being hunted. She offers him refuge and asks what happened to him. However, he leaves before Lucien can return, with Clémence joining him in his mission to help free the captain. After finding Eyk and Ramiro, they convene in the bay with Maura and the boy, who the mutineers demand they hand over. The boy willingly turns himself over and is taken to the upper deck, where he is thrown overboard. There, Clémence and Jérôme are confronted by Lucien, who pulls her closer to him and retreats back onto the ship.[3]

Clémence asks Lucien if he was ever in love with her. He doesn't answer directly, instead explaining that she's lived an easy life, whereas many others struggle daily to get to where she is. In this, she realizes that Lucien's life story has all been a lie, that he's not a lieutenant, and that nothing he's told her about his family was true. Lucien and Clémence are taken by surprise when Jérôme barges in their room. He disarms Lucien and instructs Clémence to tie him up to the bed frame. He then ties Clémence up before restraining himself to ensure none of them jump overboard, as a strange ticking sound seems to be compelling passengers to do just that. Once the ticking stops, Jérôme frees himself of the restraints and then unbinds Clémence before leaving.[4]

Searching for passengers[]

With many of the passengers having jumped overboard, the ladies that remain canvas the ship for any survivors. Clémence and Tove enter an abandoned cabin, at which point, Clémence reveals that she always wanted children, but then her sister had her first two, and Clémence discovered they were quite annoying. She supposes it's like all those things people tend to want when they're younger: children, to fall in love, getting married, it always ends up being the complete opposite of what one expected. Clémence admires Tove because of how strong she presents herself. In a show of strength herself, Clémence takes off her dress and puts on a pair of men's pants, explaining that men invented dresses and heels so that women couldn't run. After Tove suffers an episode of some kind, they make their way to the lower deck, where Tove finds Ada's doll. Clearly grieving, Clémence decides to give her a moment alone, but when she returns, Clémence finds Tove in a panic and her face covered in blood.[5]

Lucien's death[]

While shoveling coal into the furnaces to keep the engine running, Lucien collapses from having a seizure. Jérôme and Clémence are forced to carry him from the engine room to their cabin, however, by the time they reach the cabin, Lucien has died.[6]

Upon discovering that they're all trapped within a simulation, Clémence and Jérôme follow the lead of the other passengers and attempt to find a way off the ship, but when the virus starts spreading and doors begin disappearing, they go searching for Maura and the captain. They ultimately end up in Ling Yi's memory, where the virus continues to grow at a rapid pace. After making their way back onto the ship with the other passengers, they watch as the countdown begins for the deletion of the corrupted simulation.[7]
