Iben is the matriarch and true believer of her family. She boards the Kerberos in hopes of starting a church when they arrive in America.
Biography[]
Tove's pregnancy[]
Iben watches nervously over Tove as she begins experiencing unexpected pain. In spite of her reluctance to seek outside help, Krester does so and returns with a doctor, who reveals that the baby has seemingly gotten tangled up in the umbilical cord, and in order to save it, Maura has to turn it around despite Iben's objections.[1]
Ada's death[]
Iben grows worried when Ada disappears aboard the ship. When Tove returns after failing to find her, Iben claims that it's through prayer that they find the right path. Anker, on the other hand, all he can do is cry whilst holding Ada's doll.[2]
Hunting down the boy[]
After learning from Sebastian that the boy they recovered from the Prometheus may be responsible for the recent rash of unexplainable deaths, Iben deduces that he's the devil in disguise and grabs Tove's gun before leading the lynch mob in search of the boy. Their first stop is Maura's room, where the boy was seen last, but after forcing their way inside, they discover that the boy is gone and begin searching the entire ship, room by room. Eventually, they find themselves in Ángel's room, who to Iben's surprise is familiar with Krester. Realizing that they have some kind of bond, Iben looks at Krester and says that she wishes it would've been him instead of Ada. In response, Krester feels as if he has no other choice but to push Ángel away and spit in his face. Once they have the boy in their possession, in part thanks to Krester, Iben takes him to the upper deck, where a brawl breaks out as she throws the boy overboard.[3]
The ticking[]
Iben is among many passengers who appear to be entranced by a strange ticking sound throughout the ship that compels the inflicted to throw themselves overboard. Whilst she is saved and restrained in third class by Tove and Anker, Krester isn't as fortunate and goes overboard.[4]
With many of the passengers having jumped overboard, the ladies that remain canvas the ship for any survivors, during which point, Virginia extends her condolences to Iben for her loss. Iben believes that each of their stories have already been written by God and there's nothing they can do about it but accept His choice. Everything that happens is part of His plan.[5]
Drowning on the Kerberoes[]
With the storm worsening, the passengers make their way to the engine room to warn the others about the threat it presents of capsizing the ship. However, Iben decides to stay behind, refusing to follow behind Ramiro and Clémence, a false priest and a whore, any longer. Iben believes this is God's will, but Tove tells her that God can't save them. With her mother refusing to follow, Tove proceeds ahead, though Anker says goodbye, deciding to stay behind with Iben, who he cannot leave behind. Uncertain how much time they have left together, she suggests they pray, refusing to leave the hall even as it fills with water. In their final moments, Iben and Anker hold each other close as they're engulfed by the water.[6]
