Krester is Tove's younger brother, who he is very protective of, along with the rest of his family, who are traveling in a dark lower-class cabin of the Kerberos and not the ritzy first class of the other passengers.

Biography[]

Life in Denmark[]

Krester used to work on a farm with his family. Whilst working on said farm, he was shot in the face by the farm owner for a "sin" he committed involving the farmer's son, allegedly taking the boy's innocence. In return, Villads took Tove's innocence by raping her in front of the family. Fortunately, Tove regained consciousness and killed the farmer. Due to a traumatic incident, the family fled and boarded the Kerberos to build a church in America.[1]

Meeting Ángel[]

Krester barges into the first class dining room asking for the help of a doctor for his sister before being dragged away by Franz, who threatens to throw him overboard should he try another stunt such as that. Fortunately, Krester's risk is not without reward, as Maura offers to assist and manages to not only save Tove, but her unborn baby as well. As a show of gratitude, he offers Maura his cross, but she brushes past him and back upstairs. Later that night, Krester makes the acquaintance of Ángel on the upper deck, while separated by a locked gate. He asks for a cigarette. He obliges, but first, Ángel places the cigarette in his mouth before handing it over to Krester. Taking a particular interest in the scars on his face, Ángel attempts to touch him, but Krester nervously pulls away and retreats down into the lower deck.[2]

After washing his hair with help from Ada, who was already establishing plans for when they arrived in America, Krester receives an unexpected visit from Ángel, who gifts him his silver cigarette case, placing it in Krester's pocket himself. Tove interrupts, and Ángel sees his way out. Tove questions what he wanted, but Krester claims that he doesn't know, only for Tove to later learn of the gift Krester received. Nevertheless, she reminds him of the promise he made to her.[3]

Looking for Ada[]

Krester attempts to unlock the door keeping him down in the lower deck, but he is without luck, calling out to Ada, who doesn't respond. Not long after, Ángel arrives, and Krester asks if he's seen Ada, but the two don't understand each other, which is further cemented when Ángel asks about the scar on Krester's face. Ángel then proceeds to put his hand down Krester's pants until Krester pulls away, at which point, Krester returns the favor and places his hand down Ángel's. When Krester finally returns to the lower cabins, he finds Ada's body lying on the table with his mother, father, and sister by her side. He doesn't utter a word, instead, he grabs a stool and attempts to break the window until Tove pulls him away. Krester exclaims that they have to open a window or else her soul can't escape. Tove comforts her younger brother as he cries in her arms.[4]

Hunting down the boy[]

Krester joins his mother's side in hunting down the boy from the Prometheus, who they suspect is responsible for the recent deaths. They go room-to-room before arriving at Ángel's cabin. When one of the mutineers attempt to steal his valuables, naturally Ángel looks to him for help, which doesn't go unnoticed by his mother, who demands to know why Ángel knows his name. Iben then grabs the pocket watch and drops it at Ángel's feet, before looking to Krester and saying that she wishes it would've been him instead of Ada. Ángel grabs Krester's arm as he walks away in tears, but with his mother watching, Krester feels as if he has no other choice but to push Ángel away and spit in his face.

After capturing the boy, Krester is confronted by Tove, who questions if he's truly willing to sacrifice the boy just for their mother's love. Krester replies that she has to stop blaming them for what happened to her. He claims that he's doing this because Ada died, and more people are dying, whilst Tove is only interested in her own misery.[5]

Jumping overboard[]

Krester and Tove reminisce over the time Ada bathed the piglet in the font. She was always different from the rest of them and never afraid of their mother, who Tove claims is sick. The voices she hears are not those of God, who would never ask them to kill an innocent boy, to which Krester responds that Tove has killed before, but she argues that her situation was different. She then reminds Krester of the promise he made her, that they would leave their parents as soon as they arrived in America, but he doesn't seem so certain anymore. Later that evening, Krester, as well as many other passengers, are affected by a strange ticking sound from the ship that compels them to jump overboard.[6]

Tove begins to see Krester's ghost aboard the ship. He leads her to an empty room, which traps her in the memory of which she was raped and impregnated.[1]
