Lucien is a young groom on his honeymoon, though he quickly proves to be a less-than-stellar husband to his beautiful but distant new bride, Clémence. Locked in an arranged marriage, they both have personal reasons for wanting to leave Europe and go to America. For Lucien, it's to seek treatment for his epilepsy.
Biography[]
French war[]
Lucien and Jérôme fought side by side in the war together. They took refuge in a trench, and with their commander now dead for two days, Lucien devised a plan to steal his identity and walk to the nearest military post, posing as a wounded lieutenant, but Jérôme feared the consequences of deserting their Legion and refused to go along with the plan. So Lucien knocked Jérôme unconscious, locked him up, and went forward with his plan. When he reached the nearest military post, he'd tell them that Jérôme was a deserter. While he could not set Jérôme free, Lucien gave him the commander's medal to trade while in prison.[1]
Pursuing Ling Yi[]
After noticing a young geisha girl in the dining room, Lucien returns to his cabin, where he and Clémence have sex until he angrily pushes her aside due to her visible lack of interest, accusing her of simply lying on the bed and playing dead. He reminds Clémence that her parents are no longer around and tells her to drop her pretentious act of innocence. Their union was an arrangement, not a marriage, he remarks before exiting the room. That evening, after learning from the captain that they changed course to search for the missing ship, the Prometheus, Lucien flees to the middle deck, where his hand begins to seize. As he attempts to take his medication, Clémence approaches, forcing him to hide his ailment.[2]
Lucien approaches Ling Yi on the deck, but is unable to communicate with her due to speaking different languages. He's always wanted to go to Japan, given how fascinating it looked. He hoped he'd have the opportunity to see it some day. After Ling Yi is pulled away by her "servant," Lucien is approached by Virginia, who has taken notice of his distant relationship with his new wife and has an offer for Lucien, involving Ling Yi, who she refers to as an "exotic little bird."[3]
Lucien's hand begins to seize. So he grabs his seizing medicine, but just like before, he is interrupted by Clémence before he can take it and heads out the room, declining Clémence's company, as his session with Ling Yi has already been arranged. Ling Yi performs an intricate geisha dance for him, displaying the polished skills she's learned at Virginia's behest. However, as she prepares to undress, Lucien stops her. To her surprise, he didn't want sex. He simply wanted to stay in her cabin for a while. As his entire body begins to seize, he tells Ling Yi not to worry and that it won't last long.[4]
Confronted by Jérôme[]
After being directly confronted, Lucien reluctantly reveals to Clémence that his vials are filled with potassium bromide to help with his seizures. If he doesn't take it, he begins seizing uncontrollably, but if he does, then he can't get a hard-on. The truth is, Lucien fears he will die soon. A few weeks at most. He didn't tell her sooner because he knows that she doesn't actually care if he's dead or alive. Lucien then opens his drawer and finds his commander's medal inside. He slams Clémence against the wall in a fit of rage and asks where it came from before storming out abruptly. He goes to the middle deck to toss the medal, but when he returns to the cabin, he finds the door ajar and Clémence missing. Fearful she may be in danger, he grabs his gun and goes searching for her. He finds Clémence on the upper deck with Jérôme. With his gun drawn, Lucien pulls Clémence closer to him and retreats.[1]
When asked if he was ever truly in love with her, Lucien doesn't answer directly, instead explaining that she's lived an easy life, whereas many others struggle daily to get to where she is. In this, she comes to realize that Lucien's life story has all been a lie, that he's not a lieutenant, and that nothing he's told her about his family was true. Every morning, he wakes up wishing that he wasn't in love with Clémence because she's a constant reminder of what he can't have.
Lucien and Clémence are taken by surprise when Jérôme barges in their room. He disarms Lucien and instructs Clémence to tie him up to the bed frame. He then ties Clémence up before restraining himself to ensure none of them jump overboard, as a strange ticking sound seems to be compelling passengers to do just that. Once the ticking stops, Jérôme frees himself of the restraints and then unbinds Clémence before leaving.[5]
Death by seizure[]
While shoveling coal into the furnaces to get the engine back on, Lucien apologizes to Jérôme for turning him into a deserter. Additionally, Lucien reveals that contrary to what it may seem, he did not get what he wanted. He got what he deserved. He is seizure prone and may only have a few days to live, which is why he was headed to America, as there is a doctor who could potentially save him, but he's never done the procedure on a living patient.[6] Not long after, Lucien begins seizing, but his vials are in their cabin, forcing Jérôme and Clémence to carry him whilst Ramiro and Ángel stay behind and continue to shovel. However, by the time Jérôme and Clémence reach the cabin, Lucien has died.[7]
