Ramiro assumes the persona of a priest accompanying his reckless brother on a transatlantic journey to America, but in reality, he is a Portuguese servant boy on the run, along with Ángel, who is not his brother, but rather his secret lover.
Biography[]
Finding the Prometheus[]
While in the dining room and in the presence of many others aboard the ship, Ramiro advises his "brother" to keep a low profile, but Ángel is very boisterous and exclaims that no one outside of the two of them can even speak Spanish. When they make it back to the room, they make a startling discovery that the ship is turning, leading them to fear that they are headed back to Europe. However, they would soon learn that the ship is turning, not to go back home, but in search of the Prometheus, for which the captain seeks Ramiro's religious beliefs when boarding the seemingly abandoned ship. It is in the dining room that they discover a young boy hidden inside a cabinet with a small pyramid shaped object in his hand.[1]
Ramiro joins Ángel on the deck, unable to shake what little time he spent on the Prometheus, recalling the terrifying look the boy had in his eyes the night prior. When Tove interrupts to warn Ángel to leave her brother alone, Ramiro glares at him disapprovingly before returning to the cabin, where they discuss Ramiro's fear, specifically the fact that he was neither a priest nor Ángel's brother, and he doubted anyone actually believed the latter, as Ramiro isn't even Spanish. In reality, Ramiro is a Portuguese servant. Ramiro remarks that Ángel's mother was right about him; he doesn't care about anything or anyone but himself, to which Ángel replies that Ramiro is simply jealous. Overwhelmed with sexual tension, the two proceed to have sex in the cabin.[2]
Imprisoned with the captain[]
Ramiro learns from Ángel that some of the passengers have staged a mutiny, but he is more concerned with a drawing of Krester in Ángel's book. Ramiro accuses Ángel of constantly making him feel inferior and as if it's his fault, but in reality, Ángel is the cause of it all. Ramiro killed a man, took his clothes and identity, all because of Ángel and his inability to control his urges. He reminds Ángel of his promise to change, to which Ángel replies that he cannot change the nature of things and that he is who he is. Ramiro storms out, and when asked where he's going, Ramiro reveals he plans to warn the captain.[3]
After Franz takes Jérôme and Olek away, Ramiro and the captain attempt to escape the cellar they've been locked in by the mutineers. Ramiro first helps Eyk break the pole his handcuffs are locked around and then escapes through a vent that leads to a secluded area of the ship, where they are joined by Jérôme and Clémence. The four of them attempt to escape on a lifeboat, at which point they're joined by Maura and the boy, who, when confronted by the mutineers, willingly gives himself over and is thrown overboard.[4]
After the boy somehow miraculously ends up back on the ship and some of the passengers begin killing themselves due to an unknown ticking sound, Ramiro rushes back to his cabin to check on Ángel, who has barricaded himself inside. Eventually, the ticking stops, and Ramiro and Ángel sigh with relief.[5]
Steering the ship[]
With most of the passengers having jumped overboard, only a few remain. And so, Ramiro remains in the bridge with Anker a fellow priest, who confesses that he's never heard God's voice himself, and if he's being honest, he doesn't actually believe there is a God. As Anker begins to sob, Ramiro takes his hands and says that all his sins will be forgiven. After a while, the engine turns back on. Overly enthused, Ramiro kisses Anker on the cheek. However, Anker is concerned with the fact that there's no one to steer the ship. Ramiro first uses a map to find the nearest island, and then Anker begins reading books to hopefully learn how to steer the Kerberos, however, inside the books, he discovers the same phrase written on every page: "May your coffee kick in, before reality does."[6]
With the storm threatening to capsize the ship, the remaining passengers head down into the engine room to warn the others. By the end, Ramiro and Ángel are left down in the engine room alone to continue shoveling coal into the furnaces so that the ship doesn't lose power again. However, the ship takes a massive dip, causing a large metal beam in the engine room to fall onto Ángel. Ramiro tries to free him, but there's no point. Ángel says that he will never understand why Ramiro fell in love with him and that he's the gentlest, most loyal man he'd ever met. With his final breath, he says that Ramiro is better off without him and that he's scared.[7]
End of the simulation[]
After being sent to the archive and learning from Maura that they're all trapped in a simulation, Ramiro and the other passengers begin looking for a way off the boat, but he and Ling Yi get separated from the rest of the group and end up inside of Ramiro's memory. Ramiro and Ling Yi hear a noise coming from the well. They pull on the rope, and on the other end is Mei Mei, trapped inside the box that Ling Yi and her mother disposed of her body in. Ling Yi panics and flees into Olek's memory. Ramiro on the other hand hears Ángel's voice and follows it back on to the ship and down into the engine room, where he and the other passengers watch as the corrupted simulation is deleted.[8]
