Synopsis[]

A girl and other passengers suffer a terrible fate. Olek frees Ling Yi from a box. The Captain makes a discovery that challenges his trust in Maura.

Plot[]

Ling Yi is locked inside a chest sinking to the bottom of the ocean when she awakens in her bed on the Kerberos to whispers telling her to "wake up." She looks around the room, staring at her wig and kimono, which has an inverted triangle printed on the back. After catching her breath, she joins Yuk Je and Virginia in the dining room, where Virginia reveals that with the ship having turned around, they need to adapt to the change in circumstances. She gets up and leaves, telling them to meet her in her room after breakfast. Now, more than ever, Yuk Je is regretting having ever gotten aboard the ship.

Krester attempts to unlock the door keeping him down in the lower deck, but he is without luck, calling out to Ada, who doesn't return his call.

Maura and Eyk watch from the sideline as Dr. Murray examines Ada's corpse to potentially determine a cause of death, but he is without luck finding any outside factors, claiming natural causes, but Maura had met Ada two days ago in third class, and she appeared perfectly healthy. Dr. Murray claims that Maura being an emotional woman makes her incapable of seeing the facts at hand. Eyk instructs Sebastian and Franz to keep Ada's death a secret for the time being. The ship then comes to an unexpected stop.

Maura, Eyk, Sebastian, and Franz rush to the deck, where they discover why the boat had come to a stop; they are completely covered in fog, unable to see ahead of the boat. Wilhelm explains that they had a perfect view one moment, but then the next moment, the fog appeared almost out of nowhere, making it impossible for them to travel ahead. With the Captain out of hearing range, Franz confides in Sebastian and Wilhelm that Eyk has completely lost his mind and is incapable of making smart decisions.

Eyk takes Maura to his cabin, where he reveals to her that he found his daughter's ribbon on the Prometheus despite her and the rest of his family having died in a fire two years ago. Admittedly, Eyk is starting to believe that he's going mad and looks to Maura for an answer. She explains that their brains aren't always entirely reliable and that sometimes they misinterpret the impulses in their head. He then shows her the tiled shaft hidden under his floorboards. Eyk isn't entirely sure what's happening, but whatever it is, he suspects the company is trying to hide it. He also believes that whatever happened on the Prometheus, the Captain would've written it down, so he plans to go back to the Prometheus in search of the log book.

Tove returns to her mother and father after failing to find Ada. She looks to them for answers, to which Iben replies that it's through prayer that they find the right path. Anker on the other hand, all he can do is cry whilst holding Ada's doll.

Virginia instructs Ling Yi to undress and to lie down on the bed with her legs spread so that she can perform a health check. Holding back tears, Ling Yi reluctantly allows Virginia to perform her check, during which point, she discovers that Ling Yi is a virgin, meaning that she's an imposter as Virginia was under the impression that Ling Yi was one of her best working girls. However, Virginia decides to make the best of their predicament. Pleasantly surprised, she reveals to Ling Yi that her rarity has value and to be ready at 8:00.

Franz advises Eyk against leaving the ship again, as the passengers need to know what's going on. Sebastian agrees and says that they should simply leave Prometheus behind and set the Kerberos back on course. Eyk will not be deterred and gets into the lifeboat with Maura as it is lowered into the water. With the Captain's refusal to listen, Franz insists that they act on their own. Sebastian is in agreement, and once he's alone, he uses the triangle code from the tickertape and inputs it into a simple electronic console hidden behind a wall panel.

With Maura gone, the boy takes the pyramid and crawls under the bed.

While rowing the boat to the Prometheus, Maura questions why Eyk asked her to join him in the infirmary. Contrary to Dr. Murray, Eyk believes that Maura is a competent doctor. He asks if she has children. Unfortunately, she doesn't. A couple of years ago, she had a miscarriage. There were complications, and she can no longer have children. He then asks why is she so afraid to go back home. Maura replies that she lost everything.

Ling Yi reveals to her mother that Virginia knows they lied and that she took the place of another girl. For this, Yuk Je blames Ling Yi, as all this was in the pursuit of her freedom. Yuk Je wanted a better life for Ling Yi, one that didn't consist of her selling her body like Yuk Je had done. In the past, she would hide Ling Yi whenever the men came aboard, a time in her life which Ling Yi compares to being in a prison, though Yuk Je was simply protecting her, as there is no turning back once she sells herself. It's s kind of dirt that never rubs off, Yuk Je explains. Upset, Ling Yi flees the cabin and runs to the upper deck, where she can barely see in front of herself due to the fog, but she finds a crate to hide in for the time being.

Once inside, Ling Yi finds herself reliving a memory. She and Yuk Je are on a boat, and her mother is scolding her for having killed someone, though it was an accidental poisoning. Ling Yi explains she simply wanted to make the girl sleep, nevertheless, they have to dispose of the body. And so, Ling Yi and Yuk Je dump the crate with the body inside in the water.

Olek overhears Ling Yi's cries for help and releases her from the crate on the upper deck. As she shivers, he hands her his coat and offers to hide her some place safe when Yuk Je calls through the fog.

Franz heads down into third class, where he finds Tove and reveals that he found her sister. He takes Tove to the infirmary, where she discovers Ada's lifeless body lying on the table. She asks who did it, but Franz doesn't have the answers. He offers to help Tove carry Ada back down to the lower class, but she is determined to do so herself, with Franz following.

Krester and Ángel convene once more on the upper deck, though just like before, they are separated by the bars that keep the third class on the lower tier of the ship. Krester is looking for his sister, asking if Ángel has seen her, but the two don't understand each other. Ángel then asks about the scar on Krester's face, but he doesn't answer. They all wear masks, Ángel says, adding that they present a perfect illusion on the outside while they desperately try to hide who they are on the inside. Ángel has been forced to hide who he is his whole life. He didn't choose his mask, his mother did. Ángel then proceeds to put his hand down Krester's pants until Krester pulls away, at which point, Krester returns the favor and places his hand down Ángel's.

Maura and Eyk arrive in the bridge of the Prometheus, only to discover that the logbook is missing. And so, they head down into the Captain's cabin, where they find another tiled shaft hidden beneath the floor, same as the Kerberos. Maura heads down first, but the shaft leads nowhere, met with only four corners.

Just as the boy comes from out under the bed with the pyramid, there's a knock at the door, and a green bug comes crawling under to unlock the cabin, allowing Daniel to enter. The boy picks up the bug as Daniel asks if he found "it." However, the boy silently shakes his head, indicating that did not.

Eyk questions why anyone would build a shaft inside a steamship. He recalls that a few months ago, a total of three German ships were sold to a British investor by the name of Henry Singleton. The ships went to the dry dock for three months, with the investor claiming that a new communication system was put in and that the boats were refurbished. The triangle on the hatch to the shaft is the ship company's symbol, meaning the shaft was added by the company. However, that's not all they changed, Eyk claims.

Olek takes Ling Yi to the same area where they lower the boats and offers to get her something to eat. In his absence, the fog rolls into the space, consuming her, reopening yet another memory from that tragic night. She finds herself face-to-face with Mei Mei, a friend of hers, who Ling Yi isn't quite sure is really there, asking if she is human or ghost. Ling Yi warns her to leave immediately, to which Mei Mei replies that her ship doesn't depart until later. Before she left, she wanted to show Ling Yi her kimono, the same kimono that Ling Yi currently wears. Mei Mei is overwhelmed with excitement. While she waited in England for the ship to America, they would teach her dance lessons and Japanese. As Ling Yi begins to question why this is happening again, Mei Mei starts writhing on the ground in pain after drinking Ling Yi's tea. It was meant to only put her to sleep, but instead killed her. Ling Yi is immediately regretful of her actions and holds Mei Mei as she draws her final breath.

Olek returns to the bay to find Ling Yi whimpering within the same dense fog that disperses upon his arrival. He helps Ling Yi to her feet and consoles her as she explains that she's done something horrible and that everything about her is a lie. As Olek holds her in his arms, she repeats the phrase, "We are not supposed to have dreams."

Krester returns to the lower cabins to find Ada's body lying on the table. His mother, father, and sister are standing by her side. He doesn't utter a word, instead, he grabs a stool and attempts to break the window until Tove pulls him away. Krester exclaims that they have to open a window or else her soul can't escape. Tove comforts her younger brother as he cries in her arms. Franz storms out.

In the upper decks of the ship, Franz finds three more dead passengers in a corridor, who have all seemed to perish in similar fashion to Ada.

Eyk takes Maura to the Prometheus' engine room, where he shows her some type of machine that the new company had installed into the ships. They claimed it was to measure the steam pressure and send signals up to the bridge, but it never worked, leading Eyk to suspect that it has a different purpose. Maura turns her attention to the boilers, suspecting that someone may have used them as crematory furnaces to burn the bodies of the other passengers. She begins combing looking through the ash. Searching a different boiler, Eyk finds the burned remains of a book. He extracts a mostly-intact passenger list. Skimming it, he makes a startling discovery, which he decides to hide from Maura, denying that he found anything.

Ling Yi returns to the cabin, where she is embraced by her mother, who asks for forgiveness, but it is Ling Yi who is truly apologetic. She admits that Yuk Je was right about them not having dreams. And if they took what didn't belong to them, their dreams would turn to nightmares. She then asks her mother to inform Virginia that she's ready for her very first appointment with a male client.

Lucien's hand begins to tremble. Inside the drawer, next to an envelope, similar to those of Maura and Eyk's, Lucien picks up a vial of anti-seizure medicine. Just like before, he is interrupted by Clémence before he can take it and heads out the room, declining Clémence's company. Just down the hall, Virginia receives payment from Lucien for arranging a session between himself and Ling Yi. She places the money in a box, which also contains an envelope similar to that of Maura, Eyk, and Lucien's.

As planned, Ling Yi convenes with Lucien to fulfill her obligations, beginning with a traditional dance. When she begins to undress for sex, Lucien informs her that's not what he came for; he simply wanted to stay in her cabin for a while. His hand begins to tremble. He confides in her that things never work out as they imagine. He has everything he's ever wanted his entire life, but none of that matters now. As his entire body begins to seize, he tells Ling Yi not to worry and that it won't last long.

Maura and Eyk return to the Kerberos, but he hasn't spoken a word since they left the boiler room. When she asks if he's alright, he advises her not to tell anyone where they were.

Franz informs Sebastian of the recent dead. Three bodies lay in front of them, and he tells that found three more in the crew quarters. All the same as Ada, no blood, no bruises. Franze demands that in the Captain's absence, as First Mate, Sebastian must take command of the ship. Something killed everyone on the Prometheus, and Franz believes the same is happening to the Kerberos. Perhaps the reason the company wanted them to sink the ship is because they didn't want whatever was on that ship getting off, but Sebastian agrees they should wait on Captain Larsen's command. However, Franz is past waiting. He rallies a crew, gathers guns, and heads down into the lower class to stage a mutiny and turn the ship back around to America. Among them is Olek, who tries to sneak out, but is apprehended by Franz and locked in a cellar, where Jérôme is also held captive.

Ángel informs Ramiro that Franz has staged a mutiny, but Ramiro is more concerned with a charcoal drawing of Krester in Ángel's book. Ángel enthusiastically reveals that they're turning the ship around, but Ramiro isn't certain that he still wants that, which Ángel writes off as melodramatics. Ramiro accuses him of constantly making him feel inferior and as if it's his fault, but in reality, Ángel is the cause of it all. Ramiro killed a man, took his clothes and identity, all because of Ángel and his inability to control his urges. He reminds Ángel of his promise to change, to which Ángel replies that he cannot change the nature of things and that he is who he is. Ramiro storms out, and when asked where he's going, Ramiro reveals he plans to warn the Captain.

Back inside his cabin, Eyk looks over the passenger list of the Prometheus again and sees Maura's name. Meanwhile, Maura and Daniel are on the middle deck, where Daniel claims that the fog came almost as if with the purpose to stop Eyk from dragging them back to Europe. While she doesn't agree with the Captain, she understands that his judgment is clouded by his past experiences. A mob with guns comes storming past and headed towards the Captain's cabin.

Ramiro tries to warn Eyk of the mutiny, but the language barrier prevents it. At that moment, Franz and Tove lead a brigade of renegade passengers and crewmen to the Captain's cabin. Armed with guns, they declare that they're turning the ship around.

Daniel heads back to his room, where he shuffles around the pieces of a small hand held device that appears to activate the alleged steam pressure measurer that was installed by the company. Instead of measuring steam, the device seems to make the Kerberos completely disappear.
