Synopsis[]
Tove has scary flashbacks and wants to kill the boy. Daniel follows Maura and the captain into a strange place. Maura's father appears with a message.
Plot[]
Tove is racing through the woods in search of Ada and chases her behind a tree, from where a man from her past named Villads appears with a rifle, startling Tove, who then wakes up back on the Kerberos after hearing a voice in her head instruct her to "wake up." Disheveled, she looks around the Kerberos' bridge and spots Maura in the corner. Tove grabs her gun and demands to know where the boy is, realizing now that her mother is right about the boy being cursed. Anker intervenes and encourages Tove to lower her weapon.
With the engine to the ship no longer functioning due to the loss of crewmen, Eyk splits up the group; he instructs Olek and Franz to lead all the men to the engine room. As for Anker and Ramiro, they're to stay behind with Sebastian and learn the inner workings of the telegraph, so they can send a distress signal with their coordinates. He then instructs Virginia to lead the women in search for any potential survivors, whilst he and Maura look for the boy.
Maura asks why Eyk didn't tell the others about her father. In response, he asks why she didn't tell them he was somehow the captain of the Prometheus. She thanks him for not thinking she's crazy, and just as it seems they're about to kiss, Maura continues the search for the boy.
Save for Maura and Ling Yi, the ladies go room-to-room in search of survivors. Tove is startled by an unsettling noise, leading her mother to believe she's chosen, which Tove insists is not the case. In order to canvas the hall faster, the ladies split into two groups: Virginia and Iben, and Clémence and Tove.
The men and Ling Yi make their way to the engine room, during which point, they come across some type of black stalactite-like crystalline growth, which Daniel advises the others against touching.
Maura takes Eyk to her cabin, where she explains that the boy took her down the tiled shaft and that was the last she saw of him. They climb down and enter Maura's memory together. Maura explains that the landscape resembles the place she grew up, but it feels different. The building just across the way belonged to her father, and Maura suspects that the boy may be inside.
Tove and Clémence enter an abandoned cabin, at which point, Tove begins to experience slight pregnancy pains. She reveals to Clémence that the baby is due in two months. Clémence always wanted children, but then her sister had her first two, and Clémence discovered they were quite annoying. She supposes it's like all those things people tend to want when they're younger: children, to fall in love, getting married, it always ends up being the complete opposite of what one expected. Clémence admires Tove because of how strong she presents herself. In a show of strength herself, Clémence takes off her dress and puts on a pair of men's pants, explaining that men invented dresses and heels so that women couldn't run.
The men arrive in the engine room and immediately begin shoveling coal into the furnaces, but like before, the lever is stuck, forcing Olek to go up into the coal bunker, with Ling Yi following close behind to help him pull the stuck lever. He drops his photo of the Statue of Liberty, which Ling Yi presumes is from a girl, but it is in fact from his brother, who lives in America. Ling Yi says that Olek is so different from other men and then kisses him.
Daniel has split off from the men and enters Maura's memory. Meanwhile, Maura and Eyk enter the mental hospital that Maura explains her father built for her mother. She was the only one her father ever showed affection to. Maura and Ciaran were her only children, but with each birth, she became less and less of who she used to be. At first, she forgot things, then she started to forget their names, and eventually forget them all together, for which her father resented them. He wanted her to get better, so he built the hospital to learn how to repair the human brain. Maura and Eyk enter the room at the end of the hall, where nothing but a patient chair sits in the middle. Eyk asks what happened here, but Maura cannot recall. Eyk opens the curtains and glass doors to discover not outside, but the riveted steel hull of the Kerberos on the other side of the window. Maura breaks the wood paneling covering the other windows, finding the same thing.
Tired of waiting for a response to their Morse code messaging that'll likely never come, Sebastian leaves the bridge, leaving Ramiro and Anker behind. Anker confesses that he never wanted to be a priest. He was a farmer, like his father and grandfather. They didn't have a lot of money, but they were happy. But then something happened, and after that, his wife began hearing God's voice. He told her had had bigger plans for them. It gave her hope when everything seemed hopeless. Anker also confesses that he's never heard God's voice himself, and if he's being honest, he doesn't actually believe there is a God. As Anker begins to sob, Ramiro takes his hands and says that all his sins will be forgiven.
Virginia extends her condolences to Iben for her loss. Iben believes that each of their stories have already been written by God and there's nothing they can do about it but accept His choice. Everything that happens is part of His plan. When Iben exits the room, Virginia notices the virus growing on the porthole rivet. When she gets close to touching it, it suddenly pricks her finger, which immediately begins being consumed by black.
Tove sees Krester cross the corridor and separates from Clémence in search of him. She follows him into a room, which traps her in a memory from before her pregnancy. She finds Krester being held at gunpoint by Villads and tries to stop him from shooting her brother, and though he survives, the gun goes off and Krester is shot in the face. Tove suddenly wakes back up on the Kerberos, frazzled, aiming her gun at Clémence until Iben arrives to calm and disarm her.
Sebastian makes his way to the dining room, where he climbs into the cabinet space the boy escaped from and shuts the door behind him. After shutting the door, a mysterious glow emanates from the space.
Maura approaches a wall that she claims once housed a door, the entrance to her father's office, but it is now a blank wall. Eyk slams his fist against the wall, confirming that the entire building seems to somehow be a part of the ship. Maura then reveals that the boy told her they were being listened to and that if she wanted answers, she needed to ask the Creator. Eyk questions whether that means God.
Tove and Clémence make their way to the 3rd Class area, where Tove finds Ada's doll. Clearly grieving, Clémence decides to give her a moment alone. In doing so, Tove is once again sees someone who she thinks is Krester, but when he turns, it is Villads. Tove then finds herself back in the memory of Krester being shot in the face. This time, she's a bit further in the memory; her parents have arrived and are tending to Krester who is huddled on the ground in pain. The left side of his face is mutilated by the shotgun blast that Tove managed to knock off-target. Villads asks where Tove is, to which Krester replies that she's in school. He then asks if Krester believes that telling the truth is a virtue and that telling a lie is a sin, which he does. For the commitment of a sin, the man believes that a just punishment is warranted. Anker pleads with him to spare any further violence. Villads grabs Tove, explaining that Krester stole something from him and was lying about it. He could not have people working for him, on his land, who didn't have values. He accused Krester of molesting his son and taking his innocence. He knocks Tove unconscious with the butt of his rifle. When she groggily awakens, she sees her family tied to the hay wagon and Villads raping her. She gropes for a rock and hits him in the face in an attempt to break free. However, he manages to get back on top of her and nearly chokes the life from Tove until she hits him with the rock repeatedly again. Eventually, she picks up his gun and shoots him. The gunshot echoes and Tove finds herself back on the Kerberos, but with her face covered in blood. Clémence finds Tove in a panic and consoles her.
As they shovel the coal into the furnaces, Lucien apologizes to Jérôme for turning him for being a deserter. Additionally, Lucien reveals that contrary to what it may seem, he did not get what he wanted. He got what he deserved. He is seizure-prone and may only have a few days to live, which is why he was headed to America. There is a doctor who could potentially save him, but he's never done the procedure on a patient who survived. Jérôme's feelings for Lucien remain. Suddenly, the engines restart.
The lights return to the bridge and the ship begins moving once more. Overly enthused, Ramiro kisses Anker on the cheek. However, Anker is concerned with the fact that there's no one to steer the ship, as Sebastian left the bridge. Ramiro first uses a map to find the nearest island, and then Anker begins reading books to hopefully learn how to steer the Kerberos. However, inside every book, he discovers that they are filled with a repeating phrase over-and-over: "May your coffee kick in, before reality does."
Sebastian has traveled to Henry's dark and wasteland-like landscape, surrounded by only black stones and dust. Henry accosts Sebastian of breaking protocol, to which he replies that the situation got out of hand. Nevertheless, they have approximately 48 hours for the transfer. As for the boy, he's still missing. Henry demands that he be found, as they need the pyramid for the success of the project. Henry explains that people are oblivious to reality. They only see what they want to see, imprisoned by their mind's restrictions, when all they have to do is shift their perspective to see the full scope of things.
To Maura and Eyk's surprise, the black crystals have begun to grow inside the hospital as well. Suddenly, Daniel appears, warning them against touching it. Eyk draws his gun and demands to know why Daniel is there. Maura suspects that he works for her father, but he insists that he doesn't and asks Maura to remember who he is. Daniel warns them that they don't have much time, as the crystals are spreading. With the gun to his back, Daniel disarms Eyk and then uses his hand held device to send Eyk back to his own memory. Maura picks up the gun and orders Daniel not to come any closer. He pleads with her to remember who he is, claiming that he's her husband of 12 years, but Maura is conflicted, accusing Daniel of working for her father. She orders him inside the medical room 1011 after first telling him to drop his device. Once inside, Maura locks the door behind Daniel, trapping him inside.
Maura flees the mental hospital and collapses on the ground. She calls out to her father, certain that he's watching her. In a fit of anger, she throws her gun, and it cracks the invisible wall in front of her, with Maura now realizing that her vast landscape isn't as vast as she initially thought it to be. She finds an edge and proceeds to peel a transparent panel from the wall, revealing the ship's hull. All the while her father, Henry, watches a monitor displaying the image from a hidden camera.
Tove, Iben, Clémence, and Virginia, who's entire right hand has become black, make their way to the main deck, where they are faced with an incoming lightning storm. Meanwhile, Eyk climbs up the shaft back into his cabin. However, he soon realizes that he's not on the Kerberos, but the Prometheus, or at least one of many versions of it, as he looks out the window to discover he's in a graveyard of ships.
