The Storm is the seventh episode of the first season of the Netflix original multilingual mystery thriller, 1899. It was released on November 17, 2022.

Synopsis[]

Daniel asks Maura for something she doesn't understand. Olek and Ling Yi steer the ship before a tragedy occurs. Elliot's identity comes to light.

Plot[]

After having sex, Maura and Daniel lie in bed together. He tells her that he loves her, to which she replies that she wishes the moment could last forever. Daniel reminds Maura of her thesis that one's whole reality is actually inside of one's own mind, though he doesn't necessarily agree, arguing that reality is more than neurons in the brain. Maura argues that none of it would exist without the mind to experience it. Going a step further, it might not exist at all. In truth, they'll never actually know whether the stimuli in their brains are caused by a reality or a construct of one. The bed is in a large room of a modernist building. Shortly after Maura gets out of bed to get something to eat, an alarm sounds, initiating shutdown. Daniel gets dressed and goes searching for Maura. Wandering through the desolate landscape, he finds only her gown. Daniel then awakens on the floor of the Mental Hospital to the sound of a voice telling him to "wake up." Daniel jumps to his feet and pleads with Maura to let him out as shutdown has started. He begs for her to return the device to him; there isn't much time before everyone dies again, but Maura leaves him imprisoned. She then climbs back up the shaft and into her room on the Kerberos, where she discovers the ship passing through a treacherous storm.

Tove, Anker, Iben, Ramiro, Clémence, and Virginia are on the bridge, all fearful that the ship may capsize unless someone knows how to steer the ship. They go to the engine room to warn the others and get Franz to take control of the steering. Virginia is unwell due to the virus that's infected her, but she insists that she's fine and only suffering from a bit of seasickness, deciding to stay behind on the bridge, pleading for the others to find Maura.

Daniel begins looking for other ways out the room. He uses a steel pole to pry off part of the hull behind the window, exposing a utility chase, mostly filled with electrical wires.

Maura spots Sebastian in the hall and asks if he's seen the captain, which he hasn't, having been under the impression that Eyk was with Maura. When Maura says that she thought that Eyk had 'returned' to the ship, Sebastian questions how he could have left the ship. She quickly rewords her statement to defuse the suspicion. He then asks if they found the boy, which Maura reveals she didn't. She then heads to the bridge, where she finds Virginia weak and slowly dying, her entire hand having turned black. Maura assures Virginia that she's not going to die and to think of this as a bad dream, which leads her to realize that Eyk may be back in his memory.

Sebastian navigates the uneasy halls of the swaying Kerebos, narrowly avoiding the virus crystals spreading throughout the ship. He makes his way to the infirmary, where he removes an electronic touchscreen device, hidden within a cabinet and uses it to search the ship through a 3D image.

Maura climbs down Eyk's shaft into his memory and searches for him at his old family house, unburned. The memory seems to be experiencing some kind of glitch. Not only is the landscape fritzing out, but Maura is confronted by his wife, Sara, who grabs Maura by her arm and repeatedly asks if she's lost and how she can help.

Daniel makes his way through the hull into Ramiro's memory, where his Jesus cross lies on the sand-covered grounds. He then climbs down a nearby well, all the while Henry watches on a video monitor from his office.

The remaining passengers make their way down to the engine room. Fearing that the ship may sink before they reach their destination, Ramiro begins passing out life vests, but Anker informs him that they'd freeze in the water before they'd drown due to the storm. Iben decides to stay behind, refusing to follow behind Ramiro and Clémence, a false priest and a whore, any longer. Iben believes this is God's will, but Tove tells her that God can't save them. Moreover, she's not carrying God's child nor is her mother hearing God's voice despite her ridiculous claims. With her mother refusing to follow, Tove proceeds ahead, but Anker says goodbye, deciding to stay behind with Iben, who he cannot leave behind. Uncertain how much time they have left together, she suggests they pray.

Maura returns to the Kerberos. Meanwhile, Daniel has made his way into Olek's memory, as his photo of the Statue of Liberty lays in the snow. The glitching in the memories continue, inadvertently exposing a hidden panel, which Daniel uses to travel through the hull and on to the next memory.

Down in the engine room, Lucien's hand begins to seize, but he insists that he's fine. It is then that Tove, Clémence, and Ramiro arrive to report that the storm is in danger of capsizing the ship and that there is no one on the bridge to steer. Franz orders Olek to take the helm and navigate straight into the waves to prevent them from tipping the ship. As they do that, he and Tove will close the bulkheads to keep the water out.

Maura enters Daniel's room to open the tiled shaft under his bed and finds a photo of herself on the floor when she moves the bed. She arrives in the modern house. On a table, she finds many photos of herself and Daniel, as well as the boy, leading her to remember forgotten memories.

Daniel has finally made his way back to Maura's dream, but instead of going back into the mental hospital, he digs up the unmarked grave and climbs down into a bunker, where the boy is hiding out. Daniel informs him they're shutting it down, but they've also never gotten this far before. Unfortunately, he still hasn't found the code and Maura, the boy's mother, still doesn't have her memories, including where she's hidden the code. Before leaving, the boy gives Daniel his mother's ring and says that she will wake up this time.

In the infirmary, Sebastian has located the boy and the pyramid in Maura's memory using the touchscreen device. He sends a triangle-code message to Henry.

Olek and Ling Yi make their way to the bridge and steer the ship.

Daniel climbs up Maura's shaft and discovers that she has gone down his shaft, forcing him to go in after her. He finds Maura looking over their old family photos and apologizes that she had to find out this way. Daniel reveals that the boy's name is Elliot and that he's their son, though Maura can't have children. Daniel informs her that's what she was told to believe: a false memory. Maura doesn't remember having Elliot because she wanted to forget and get rid of the pain. When she asks why, Daniel tells her to remember. He caresses her face and kisses Maura, which causes more memories to resurface, though she pushes Daniel away, claiming that he's not real, to which Daniel replies that they're all trapped in a simulation. He tells Maura that she has to remember and wake up, or else her consciousness will be trapped forever. The alarm begins to sound once more, meaning they're running out of time and needs to get Maura out before the simulation restarts.

Olek and Ling Yi struggle to steer the ship. Meanwhile, Virginia has used what little strength she has left to crawl to her room, where she recovers the letter with her name written on it. Elsewhere, as Henry watches on, he gets Sebastian's message that he's found the boy's location.

Sebastian climbs down Maura's shaft and into her memory. Moments later, Maura and Daniel exit his memory. He informs Maura that they're shutting down the simulation and that the override code is the only way out before everything restarts, though only Maura knows of its location, as she hid it and made herself forget. In the simulation, the code can be any object, including a key, leading Maura to realize she's had the code with her all along, locked inside her necklace. It was sent to her inside the envelope, Maura suspecting it was sent by her brother.

While shoveling coal into the furnace, Lucien begins seizing, but his medicine vials are in their cabin. Jérôme and Clémence carry him there whilst Ramiro and Ángel stay behind and continue to shovel.

Maura and Daniel enter the infirmary, where he grabs the same device Sebastian had used earlier, explaining to Maura that just as with any program, there are hidden cheats and shortcuts inside the simulation. He promises she'll understand it all when she wakes up. He asks for his device, which he refers to as a shell and uses it to reprogram the simulation. After they're all wiped out, the simulation will restart again, and this run will go into the archive, just like the others. The next time it will be different. Daniel intends to anchor himself and Maura to it, so they'll go through the same port to buy them more time. He tells her that the simulation has happened dozens of times before. Every simulation runs eight days, but none of the ships have ever made it to their destination. It's a repeating loop.

While steering the ship alongside Olek, Ling Yi hears her mother call out to her and looks out to the deck, where Yuk Je stands in spite of the driving rain. Ling Yi races down, with Olek chasing behind her. However, Yuk Je seemingly disappears with the storm, and Ling Yi is nearly knocked off the ship when a large wave floods the deck. Olek rescues her, but then is knocked by a wave, through the deck railing and into the water below.

By the time Jérôme and Clémence reach the cabin, Lucien has died.

With no one steering the ship, it takes a massive dip, causing a large metal beam in the engine room to fall onto Ángel. Ramiro tries to free him, but there's no point. With blood running from his mouth, Ángel says that he will never understand why Ramiro fell in love with him and that he's the gentlest, most loyal man he'd ever met. With his final breath, Ángel says that Ramiro is better off without him and that he's scared.

Tove and Franz have made it to the bulkheads, but water has already started to make its way through. Meanwhile, Anker and Iben sit in the hall as it fills with water. He wants to find someplace safe, but Iben claims that is God's will and that she knows His true path for them. Refusing to leave her behind, in spite of all her faults, Anker decides to spend his final moments with Iben. Back in the bulkheads, Tove and Franz are unable to get the first door closed, so they move to the second door, but it doesn't have a handle on the inside. Franz pushes Tove inside and locks the door from the outside as the water rises, sacrificing himself and drowning in the process. As for Anker and Iben, he holds his wife close as the flooding water consumes them both.

Henry is watching Franz, Anker, and Iben drown when Sebastian arrives with the boy and the pyramid. Henry states that every time, they make the same mistakes and every time they die because they can't get rid of their emotions. "It's human nature's ultimate flaw and what makes them weak."

Maura and Daniel enter her cabin to discover that the hatch to her tiled shaft is no longer there. Henry speaks to them over the PA system and says that Daniel's reprogramming won't help. Everyone on the ship will eventually die and take part in the next simulation; they're all trapped in the loop. However, Henry believes he can end it and wants the key. In return, he'll give them back their son. Daniel has a plan, but he needs Maura to trust him. He hands Maura her wedding ring and tells her never to forget that he loves her, before taking off.

Henry twists the bottom corner of the pyramid and opens the top, revealing a keyhole inside. He then tells Elliot that the Kerberos will be moved into the archives, his mother will bring him the key, and all this will finally come to an end. A 10-second countdown begins, at which point, a giant swirling hole opens in the ocean and consumes the Kerberos, all this whilst Ling Yi watches from the deck. The ship is taken to the archive, which is essentially a graveyard of other ships. Eyk drinks the last liquor from a small bottle while on the bridge of another ship. Once the Kerberos surfaces, the survivors, gathered on the deck, spot Eyk on the Prometheus.
