1899 Wiki

Tove is Krester's pregnant eldest sibling and the most outspoken member of her religious Danish family. She is traveling on the Kerberos with her parents and siblings to New York for the promise of life-changing opportunities in the New World.

Biography[]

Attacked by Villads[]

Tove was raped by the farmer who her family used to work for after her brother stole the farmer's son's innocence. When she came to after being struck and realized what was going on, she grabbed a rock and struck him with it a few times. They got into a fight, and she eventually grabbed hold of the gun that he was threatening her family with, and shot him dead. This traumatic event was one of the main reasons her family sought to leave Europe in hopes of a better world.[1]

Saved by Maura[]

Tove begins to experience pregnancy pains shortly after boarding the Kerberos. Fortunately, she receives medical assistance from Maura, who reveals that the baby has seemingly gotten tangled up in the umbilical cord, and in order to save it, Maura turns it around. When Tove awakens, Ada informs her that the ship has changed course and that everyone else is outside looking for the Prometheus. Ada recalls the story of the ghost ship Tove once told her, how all the passengers had sinned by killing a whale, so the spirits of the sea got so angry they sent a huge storm toward the ship and caused black waves. And when the passengers woke the following morning, they'd all been turned into shadows. Perhaps that's what happened to the Prometheus, Ada theorizes, but Tove insists it was just fairy tales.[2]

Tove walks in on Krester talking to Ángel, who excuses himself upon her arrival. Tove questions what he wanted, but Krester claims that he doesn't know. Nevertheless, she reminds him of the promise he made to her. After learning that Krester lied and that he was gifted a silver cigarette carrier, she questions why Krester accepted it and what he had to do in return, as nothing in life is free. Taking the case with her, Tove throws it at Ángel's feet and tells him to leave her brother alone.[3]

Ada's disappearance[]

After failing to find Ada, Tove is approached by Franz, who reveals that he found her sister. He takes Tove to the infirmary, where she discovers Ada's lifeless body lying on the table. She asks who did it, but Franz doesn't have the answers. He offers to help Tove carry Ada back down to the lower class, but she is determined to do so herself. By the time Krester arrives, the entire lower class has gathered. He grabs a stool and attempts to break the window until Tove intervenes. Krester exclaims that they have to open a window or else her soul can't escape. Tove comforts her younger brother as he cries in her arms.[4]

Staging a mutiny[]

Upon learning that the captain intended to turn the ship around to Europe, Tove joins Franz and his band of mutineers to take over the ship. However, when Sebastian reveals that the boy they recused from the Prometheus may be the cause of the recent deaths, Tove reconsiders her alliances, with her mother taking over the ranks and leading the mutineers in search of the boy. Tove wonders if her father believes the boy is evil. He's not certain, but he's at least considering the idea. He then places his hand on Tove's stomach and says that perhaps God gave her a gift with her child, allowing her to carry the light inside of her.

Tove pulls Krester aside to give him a reality check after seeing him with the boy and the other mutineers. She questions if he's truly willing to sacrifice the boy just for their mother's love. Krester replies that she has to stop blaming them for what happened to her. He claims that he's doing this because Ada died, and more people are dying, whilst Tove is only interested in her own misery.[5]

Krester's death[]

Tove and Krester recall how different Ada was from the rest of them and never afraid of their mother, who Tove claims is sick. The voices she hears are not those of God, rather delusion and madness; God would never ask them to kill an innocent boy, to which Krester replies that Tove has killed before, but her situation was different. She then reminds Krester of the promise he made her, that they would leave their parents as soon as they arrived in America, but he doesn't seem so certain anymore. With that, Tove shifts her alliance to the captain and his crew. However, when a ticking sound on the ship begins compelling passengers to jump overboard, including Krester, the rivaling sides are forced to work together and restrain themselves.[6]

After a frightening dream in which she encounters the man who raped and impregnated her, Tove grabs a gun and points it at Maura, suspecting that her mother was right about the boy being evil and demanding to know where he is. Fortunately, her father manages to calm her down. With many of the passengers having jumped overboard, the ladies that remain canvas the ship for any survivors. Tove and Clémence enter an abandoned cabin, at which point, Tove begins to experience slight pregnancy pains and reveals to Clémence that the baby is due in two months. Tove then sees Krester in the hall and gets separated from Clémence in search of him. She follows him into a room, which takes her back to the day when Krester was shot in the face. Tove suddenly wakes back up on the Kerberos, frazzled, aiming her gun at Clémence until her mother arrives to disarm her.

Tove and Clémence make their way to the lower deck, where Tove finds Ada's doll, before catching another glimpse of Krester's ghost, or at least so she believes. Tove then finds herself back in the memory of Krester being shot in the face. This time, she's a bit further in the memory; her parents have arrived and are checking on Krester who is writhing on the ground in pain. Villads asks about Tove and then rapes her, seeking to take the same innocence from her that Krester took from his son. Tove wakes up to find the man on top of her. She hits Villads in the face with a rock before grabbing his gun and shooting him. The gunshot echoes and Tove finds herself back on the Kerberos, but with her face covered in blood. Clémence finds her in a panic and consoles Tove.[1]

Her parents' death[]

The remaining passengers make their way to the engine room to warn the others about the storm and the threat it presents of capsizing the ship. However, her mother refuses to follow behind Ramiro and Clémence, a false priest and a whore. Iben believes this is God's will, but Tove tells her that God can't save them. Moreover, she's not carrying God's child nor is her mother hearing God's voice despite her ridiculous claims. With her mother refusing to follow, Tove proceeds ahead, saying goodbye to her father, who also decides to stay behind.

After arriving in the engine room, Tove offers to help Franz close the bulkheads to keep the water from getting in, but they're too late, as water has already started to make its way through. They are unable to get the first door closed, so they move to the second door, but it doesn't have a handle on the inside, and so, Franz sacrifices himself, pushing Tove inside and locking the door from the outside as the water rises, sacrificing himself and drowning in the process. As for Anker and Iben, they drown as well just down the hall.[7]

Deletion of simulation[]

Despite learning that they're trapped in a simulation and that everything that they've experienced on board isn't real, Tove joins the other passengers in searching for a way off the ship, only for her and Virginia to end up inside of Jérôme's memory, where Virginia begins to disintegrate in Tove's arms, until they find their way back to the ship and reconvene with the others, at which point, they gather to watch the deletion of the corrupted simulation.[8]
