Virginia Wilson presents herself as a solo woman traveler on the Kerberos, but in actuality, she is a madame with global influence, who arranged for a Chinese girl (originally Mei Mei) to be sent from her brothel in China, with the plan of presenting her in America as a high class Japanese courtesan. Virginia boards the Kerberos with Ling Yi and Yuk Je, who she planned to personally escort through the final leg of the journey.

Virginia eventually becomes aware that Ling Yi is not the originally intended girl, but does not care, so long as Ling Yi is able to fulfill her requirements. She is very keen that Ling Yi and Yuk Je do not betray their Chinese origins and reveal they are not actually Japanese, or their connection to her. She uses her fluid position on the ship to suss out and solicit other passengers as potential clients for Ling Yi, namely as a means of trialing out her new asset before debuting her in America.

Virginia is multilingual, speaking Cantonese, French, and English, at minimum. She is vocally opposed to returning to Europe. She respects Maura Franklin as a fellow independent and professional woman, but is not close to anyone in the ship.

Biography[]

Meeting Maura[]

Virginia chats up Maura in the dining room, given that she too is a woman traveling alone. Having traveled on her own for many years, Virginia is all too familiar with how easily one is judged, informing Maura that there were already rumors circulating. Developing curiosities of her own, Virginia asks if it is true that Maura is a doctor. Her focus is on the human brain, though women in England were only allowed to study, never practice. The brain drives their thoughts and behavior, holding all the secrets to the universe, Maura explains, but Virginia argues that some things are better left in the dark. Later that evening, she scolds Yuk Je and Ling Yi after seeing the two of them talking at breakfast. She reminds them that they are never to speak and instructs Ling Yi to cheer up.[1]

Selling Ling Yi to Lucien[]

Virginia susses out Lucien apparent interest in her "exotic little bird" Ling Yi. She approaches him with an offer, a transaction really, one that she's certain will be worth his while.[2] After breakfast, Virginia instructs Ling Yi to undress and to lie down on the bed with her legs spread so that she can perform a health check. Holding back tears, Ling Yi reluctantly complies, during which point, Virginia discovers that Ling Yi's a virgin, meaning she's an imposter as Virginia was under the impression that Ling Yi was one of her best working girls. However, Virginia decides to make the best of their predicament and orders Ling Yi to be ready at 8:00.[3]

Jumping overboard[]

Virginia is one of many passengers who become entranced by a ticking sound on the ship, one that compels everyone inflicted to jump overboard. However, the ticking stops just as she reaches the railing. She turns around to see Maura and the captain, to whom she reveals she just had a strange dream.[4]

Infected by the virus[]

With most of the passengers having jumped overboard, Virginia leads the women in search for any potential survivors, at which point, Virginia extends her condolences to Iben for her loss. Afterward, Virginia notices a black virus growing on the window. Upon further examination, it pricks her finger, which immediately starts turning black.[5]

With a nasty storm threatening to capsize the ship, the remaining passengers, save for Virginia, head down into the engine room to warn the others. Virginia is unwell due to the virus that's infected her, but she insists that she's fine and only suffering from a bit of seasickness, deciding to stay behind in the bridge and wait for Maura. By the time Maura does arrive, her entire hand has turned black. Maura assures Virginia that she's not going to die and to think of this as a bad dream, which leads her to making a new realization, one that she must investigate, leaving a begging Virginia behind. On her own, Virginia uses what little strength she has left to crawl to her room, where she recovers the letter with her name written on it.[6]

After the Kerberos is taken to the archive, Maura reveals that they're all trapped in a simulation and that everything that's happened since they boarded is not real. While Virginia admires that she studies medicine and stands against the conventions and limitations women face, she isn't convinced that what Maura says is the truth and goes searching for a way off the ship with Ling Yi and the few remaining passengers. However, they get split up, and Virginia and Tove end up inside of Jérôme's memory, where she begins to disintegrate until they find their way back to the ship and reconvene with the others, at which point, they gather to watch the deletion of the corrupted simulation.[7]
