Yuk Je presents herself as Ling Yi's servant to the other passengers on the ship, but in reality, she's Ling Yi's mother, who's dedicated her life to protecting her daughter at whatever cost.

Biography[]

Early life[]

At some point, Yuk Je gave birth to Ling Yi, who she raised in China on a small junk boat. Yuk Je would occasionally make money as a prostitute, hiding her daughter from her clients when they came aboard. And when they did, she'd often drug her male clients with sleeping drugs.[1]

Working for Virginia[]

After spending some time in England, Yuk and Ling Yi are being escorted to America by Virginia Wilson. While on board the Kerberos, Yuk Je encourages Ling Yi to at least pretend like she knows what she's doing and to hurry up and eat, which doesn't go unnoticed by Virginia, who confronts the two of them later that evening, reminding them that they are never to speak, lest they give away the fact that they're actually Chinese and not Japanese. After the ship goes off course to search for the Prometheus, Yuk Je informs Ling Yi that nothing has changed and that they stick to the plan. Had Ling Yi simply accepted her fate, they wouldn't be in this predicament. Yuk Je then instructs her to practice her Japanese and assures her that they will only have to pretend a little while longer. "Everything will be okay in the end. If it's not okay, it's not the end."[2]

Yuk Je is regretting having ever gotten aboard the ship after Virginia reveals that she intends to sell Ling Yi to another passenger named Lucien. But before doing so, she performs a health check, during which point she discovers that Ling Yi is an imposter and couldn't possibly be the working girl she sent for, who was dead after Ling Yi accidentally poisoned her, with Yuk Je helping dispose of the body. For everything that's happening, Yuk Je blames Ling Yi, as all this was in the pursuit of her freedom. Yuk Je wanted a better life for her daughter, one that didn't consist of her selling her body. There is no turning back once she sells herself. It's s kind of dirt that never rubs off, Yuk Je explains. Upset, Ling Yi flees the cabin. Yuk Je chases after her but gets lost in the fog and returns to her room. Some time later, Ling Yi returns and admits that her mother was right about them not having dreams. And if they took what didn't belong to them, their dreams would turn to nightmares. Nevertheless, she was ready for her first client.[3]

Jumping overboard[]

Yuk Je is one of many passengers aboard the Kerberos who are put in a trance by a clock-like ticking sound that seemed to compel passengers to jump overboard. With Ling Yi chasing behind her, Yuk Je reaches the upper deck, where Ling Yi calls out to Yuk Je, who looks back at her before going overboard.[4]

Yuk Je's ghost appears to Ling Yi as she attempts to help Olek steer the Kerberos and prevent it from capsizing in the storm. Overwhelmed, she leaves Olek to steer the ship on his while she rushes down to greet her mother, who seemingly disappears with the storm, and Ling Yi is nearly knocked off the ship when a large wave floods the deck. Olek rescues her, and he is knocked into the water below instead.[5]
